Who is a candidate for Neck Liposuction?
Neck liposuction can be a great option for people who are looking to improve the contour of their neck and remove excess fat. However, not everyone may be an ideal candidate for the procedure. Below are general qualifications for someone who may be a good candidate:
- Good Health: Candidates should be in overall good health and not have any serious medical conditions that could interfere with surgery or recovery. Patients should be nonsmokers, as smoking can slow down the healing process.
- Realistic Expectations: It’s important to have realistic expectations about what liposuction can achieve. The procedure is great for contouring and removing fat, but it does not address skin elasticity. For patients with sagging or loose skin, other treatments such as a Neck Lift may be more appropriate.
- Stable Weight: Candidates should have a relatively stable weight. Liposuction is not a weight loss solution, but a contouring procedure.
- Age Considerations: While there’s no strict age limit for neck liposuction, younger individuals (20’s-50’s) tend to see better results due to their skin’s ability to rebound after fat is removed. Older individuals may require skin reducing procedures in combination with liposuction.
What does “Neck Fat Liposuction” entail?
Neck liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that targets and removes excess fat from the neck area to create a more sculpted, defined appearance. It’s commonly performed to treat the double chin and fatty submental deposits. Here’s what the procedure typically entails:
- Consultation: When you first come to the STARS clinic you will meet with one of our Board Certified Plastic Surgeons to discuss your goals, assess the area of concern, and discuss your overall health. Your surgeon will also go over the risks and benefits of the procedure.
- Anesthesia: On the day of your procedure, you will meet with your Anesthesiologist. Neck liposuction is usually performed under local anesthesia (numbing the area with injections) or general anesthesia (where you’re asleep). This will be decided during your initial consultation by you and your surgeon.
- Incisions: Depending on the area on concern, your surgeon will make approximately 1-3 small discrete incisions for the liposuction cannula.
- Tumescent and Liposuction: Through the incisions, a thin small tube called a cannula is inserted and fluid is instilled into the procedural area. The fluid contains additional numbing medication and allows the fat to suspend or float in the fluid. After the tumescent fluid is instilled, a new cannula is placed into the incisions that is used to break up and suction out the fat.
- Finishing: One the fat is removed depending on your surgeon’s preference, the incisions will either be sutured closed or left open for any remaining tumescent fluid to naturally leak out. The neck is then wrapped in a compression garment which helps minimize swelling and promote healing.
- Recovery: Recovery time for neck liposuction is fairly quick, with many patients returning to light activities/ work within a week. You will be instructed to wear a compression garment for 23 hours a day for the first several weeks to mitigate swelling and assist with the healing process. Full recovery and optimal results may take several weeks to months for all bruising a swelling to subside.

Neck Lift Procedure
A neck lift (also known as a cervicoplasty or lower rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the neck and jawline. It addresses signs of aging, such as sagging skin, excess fat, or muscle banding, often caused by gravity, aging, genetics, or weight changes. Neck Lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia due to the invasiveness of the surgery. Incisions are commonly placed behind the ears and under your chin. Don’t worry, they heal well and are nicely hidden.
